Blue Jays firesale
« on: 14 Nov 2017 11:45:03 AM »
After falling short this year, I don't really see a path to contention in 2018/2019 given my roster and payroll situation, so the Blue Jays are looking to tear it all down and rebuild. There's a lot of dreck on my roster, but there are also a few potentially attractive pieces, including:

3B Anthony Rendon. Breakthrough year for Rendon in 2017, with an OBP-heavy 140 OPS+ and VG D at 3B. He's LTC eligible, and if I trade him it'll be for a package that assumes he'll be signed to that LTC.

1B Joey Votto. 168 OPS+ in 2017, with a league-leading .454 OBP. His performance the last few years pretty much guarantees he'll hugely outperform his contract for at least the next 3 years, and there's a good chance he'll be a bargain for all of the contract.

CF Jackie Bradley: VG D and a good bat in CF; only 4th next year, so under team control for at least 3 years.

SP Jake Arrieta: Also LTC eligible , coming off a 123 ERA+ in 2017.

SP Dallas Keuchel: bounced back from a poor 2016 with an excellent 2017, 136 ERA+.

Those are the highlights, but there are also a bunch of league-average players who can help plug some holes: Francisco Cervelli, Asdrubal Cabrera, Marcus Semien, Kole Calhoun, Denard Span, Colby Rasmus, etc.

Looking for draft picks, prospects, and young MLB-ready players in return. PM any interest.

Thanks.

Scot.

I have reached a tentative deal for Anthony Rendon, so he's off the block for now. Everyone else listed above is still available, though deals are close on a couple of them, so if you're interested let me know.

I've gotten some inquiries about Felipe Rivero and Austin Barnes. I'll listen to offers on them (and anyone else, for that matter), but it will take a lot for me to move them.

If all these deals go through, I'll probably have some payroll room in 2018. So if you've got a bad contract you're looking to dump and are willing to send picks/prospects along with it to make your problem go away, let me know.

Another tentative deal has been agreed to, and now Votto, Bradley, Calhoun, and Rivero are off the table.

Still available:

Keuchel
Arrieta

Projections for Marcus Semien are out: 107 OPS+, probably with a FR rating at SS. He's available.

Jake Arrieta is asking for a 4 year LTC at $11M per year. He’s a steal at that price; PM with inquiries/offers.

Blue Jays currently on the block:

Following in the Rangers lead, the Blue Jays are looking to move Alex Gordon, and are willing to pick up all but $1M/yr in salary. For 2018, he's projected to an 88 OPS+, +10 D in 498 PA, which probably results in an EX rating.

also available with me picking up all but $1M of his salary: Hanley Ramirez. No ZIPs yet, but Steamer has him at ~112 wRC+.

Spare parts available cheap!

The Blue Jays are willing to pick up all but $1M in salary for the following players. None of them are stars, but they can all help a team, and I'll be picking up most of their salary, and it won't take much to acquire any of them. PM/trade desk for inquiries:

SP John Lackey: 98 ERA+, 2.0 WAR/180 IP
1B Hanley Ramirez: 107 OPS+, 1.3 WAR/600 PA
2B/3B/SS Asdrubal Cabrera: 104 OPS+, 1.3 WAR/600 PA
LF Colby Rasmus: 93 OPS+, 1.2 WAR/ 600 PA - VG-EX D in LF
C Francisco Cervelli: 88 OPS+, 2.1 WAR/600 PA
CF Denard Span: 97 OPS+, 0.8 WAR/600 PA

Other guys that I would listen to offers on, but who I'll probably keep unless I get a really good offer:

C Austin Barnes: 3rd, 99 OPS+, 3.2 WAR/600 PA, coming off an excellent 2017 MLB season
SP Jake Odorizzi: 3rd, 100 ERA+, 2.1 WAR/180 IP
SS Marcus Semien: 4th, 107 OPS+, 2.4 WAR/600 PA

If anyone out there is looking to add some cash for FA, the Blue Jays are looking to buy draft picks. PM/trade desk for inquiries.

The Blue Jays are making Diego Moreno available on the trade block. He’s a 1st year player, so you’ll get up to 6 years of team control. He’s projected to a 110 ERA+ in 2018, and with a projected 2 GS, he’ll get (and keep) a starters rating. Looking for pick(s)/prospect(s). PM or trade desk.

Cleveland Indians.

There’s a chance that with 2 projected GS, he might not get a SP rating. If I make a deal and he does NOT get an SP rating on the final disk, I will immediately agree to reverse the trade.

Good form.
I was going to ask how that was handled. I know we take away the rating from pitchers with 1 gs, but wondered if we would add Pr rating for those with 2+ that didn't get one, as it happened laster year with some.

All, actually. No pitcher with 2 GS got a starter rating on the ZiPS disk, while every pitcher with >2 GS got a rating.

Whether the cutoff will be the same this year remains to be seen.

As for what to do here... frankly, it's a mess. In the abstract, giving Moreno and anyone else with 2 GS a starter rating makes sense under our current rules. (I would rather we radically increase the start minimum to something like 1/4 or 1/3 of projected games but that's a different topic.)

The problem is that announcing that after Moreno sold gives the Jays a huge windfall, as I would have outbid them last night if that had been known. (Mondo can back me up on that, as we were discussing this via PM; I also had a bit in on him that I revoked after I figured this out, which might be logged?). So I dunno what the right solution is for this year, whatever we decide for the future.
