Looking ahead to 2018
« on: 21 Aug 2017 11:41:20 AM »
With this season winding down, the Yankees are ready to start talking about the 2018 season and their return to their rightful place atop the AL East.

We are primarily interested in filling at least some of our holes as soon as possible so we can focus our free agency and other efforts rather than have to cast our nets far and wide. With that in mind, we are looking for solid-average or better (3+ WAR) starters at our positions of need, which looks likely to mean 1-2 1B/corner OF/DH and multiple SP, as well as as many solid relievers as we can find. We'll consider upgrades to star-caliber players at most other positions as well.

Salary is not a roadblock, though of course the more someone will be paid by us the less additional value we will part with to acquire him. Short-term rentals and longer-term options are both welcome.

Happy to arrange a deal now to consummate in the offseason, or we can just kick the tires and come back to things then. If you're interested, you know where to find me...

Very early, and very very likely to change given our $100M+ FA budget, but here's what the 2018 Yankees Opening Day roster might look up if the 2018 season started as of the last time this was updated.

ZiPS projections in bold whet available, otherwise Steamer.

C Devin Mesoraco (91 wRC+, -6 Def)
1B Cody Bellinger (134 wRC+, +4 Def)
2B Daniel Murphy (121 wRC+)
3B Joey Gallo (113 wRC+, +2 Def @ 1B)
SS Trea Turner (110 wRC+)
LF Andrew Toles (87 wRC+, +7 Def)
CF Ronald Acuna (100 wRC+)
RF Nick Delmonico (101 wRC+, +2 Def)
DH Lonnie Chisenhall (97 wRC+)

C Danny Jansen (87 wRC+, -1 Def)
IF Bo Bichette (96 wRC+, -10 Def @ SS)
OF Dustin Fowler (92 wRC+, -5 Def @ CF)
PH Dan Vogelbch (103 wRC+)

SP Masahiro Tanaka (4.02 FIP)
SP Brent Honeywell (4.15 FIP)
SP Jacob Turner (4.31 FIP)
SP Erick Fedde (4.32 FIP)
SP Nate Eovaldi (4.39 FIP)

CL Greg Holland (72 ERA-/71 FIP-)
SU Gregory Infante (84 ERA-/83 FIP-)
SU Phil Maton (3.90 FIP)
MR Josh Hader (88 ERA-/92 FIP-)
MR Frankie Montas (89 ERA-/92 FIP-)
MR Jose Ramirez (4.34 FIP)
LR Luis Perdomo (4.34 FIP)

The lineup isn't awful even as is (though the corner OF in particular could use a boost), but that pitching staff needs work...
