At that point, we'll be caught up.  Summer draft begins, Thursday, June 9th.

---------------------------

The dates and timeframes listed above are contingent upon ZiPS and Imagine Sports following the same timeline as last year.  All dates are subject to tweaking, but should everything follow the same schedule as last year, this will be the plan.  MP due dates are subject to moving based on the availability of the person in charge of sims in 2016.  The schedule listed simply mirrors the 2015 schedule we used.

Yeah, agreed. I think we should talk about changing the way tier 1 FAs are determined this summer (if not completely redoing how we do FA).

Soft spot for Lohse in BAL.  He was part of the original 2002 team.

I have Lohse outside of my top 50 FA Ps available this winter. I think he could be our first tier 1 FA to not get an offer.

When the league started, the tier 1 FAs gt compensation picks in the draft attached to them. To mirror real life at the time, where the best FAs earned compensation picks, the tier 1 FAs were based off the top performers in DMBO who were eligible for free agency (with some tweaking by the EC, to have tier 1 somewhat positionally balanced).

Basing tier 1 off of sim stats has always been problematic, because every year you'd have a guy (or two) with a decent projection who was good in the sim, but absolutely terrible in real life. When GMs in the league evaluate free agents, the performance in the sim is meaningless - we're all going off of real life performance. So the good sim but bad real life guy didn't have much real value, but we were still trying to make sure that the teams that lost good performances were getting the comp picks.

And then we got rid of the comp picks (which was the right thing to do, and which we should not undo, but that's another discussion), and so got rid of the reason for basing tier 1 on sim performance. But we never changed how we determine tier 1, and that's where we a today.

I'd propose a couple of potential solutions: let each GM vote for who they think the top 15 FAs should be, and use the top vote getters. Or take the guys with the top 15 WAR projections from Zips, since tier 1 now starts after the Zips projections are out. Or take the top 15 FAs with the highest real-world contract values. Or something else. Which is why I suggested we discuss it during the summer.

Without comp picks, what is even the real purpose of tier 1? Is it simply to separate the 'best' FA in order to give each their own day of bids? I rather see a total revamp of FA that makes it a more competitive atmosphere instead of a one and done on the 'best' as it doesn't really make sense to me to get one FA done at time meaning teams with money will wait for the player they want most, but if they missed out, they then missed spending that cash on players before that one and are stuck with it or have to spend it on tier 2.

This is a good point.

One league I know of has a FA system where bids are updated in real time, and teams are limited in the number of bids they can make in two ways: they can't have more top bids than they have available roster spots, and the total of their payroll plus current bids can't exceed their salary cap for the year. Players are signed when they go 2 full days with no new bids (actually, they're signed at midnight of the second day in which they receive no bids). That might be worth thinking about.

I am in the boat with Bobby and Scot...

I honestly don't know why we continue Tier 1, as I really don't know what purpose it serves the league at this point.

I have always felt that if we eliminated Tier 1, and just had ALL free agents treated like Tier 2, it would make for a  more compelling Free Agent period. (And more closely resemble real life)

Sure having a "blind bidding session" is fun, but how realistic is it ?

I remember winning Max Scherzer a few seasons by a very small amount over Jonathan's Cardinals...

I'm pretty sure Jonathan would have liked a second shot at him to force my hand.. (As would Max Scherzer at that point.. which is more "real life" than a blind bidding session )
