A's 2013 Season Outlook
« on: 26 Mar 2013 5:17:01 PM »
Rotation (ERA+)
1:  Clayton Kershaw -L- (145)
2:  Shaun Marcum -R- (109)
3:  Tommy Hanson -R- (98)
4:  Carlos Villanueva -R- (99)
5.5:  Ted Lilly -L- (91)
5.5:  Kyle Kendrick -R- (91)

Bullpen (ERA+)
LR:  Fernando Salas -R- (109)
LR:  David Herndon -R- (84)
LR:  Brian Duensing -L- (87)
MR:  Wesley Wright -L- (101)
MR:  Rex Brothers -L- (118)
CL:  Johny Venters -L- (135)

The starting rotation doesn’t look that terrible on paper, but it is not as good as last year and will have to overachieve if we are going to be Wild Card contenders in 2013. With every starter taking a hit on ERA+ (Hanson the biggest at -22) we are going to have to rely on the equally unimpressive bullpen to pull us though some rough games. It could be a long season on the hill in Oak Town.

Starting Lineup (OPS+ / DEF)
1. Coco Crisp - B - CF (99 / AV65)
2. Kendrick/Seager - R/L - 2B (102/103 / AV99/AV113)
3. Mark Teixeria - B - 1b (118 / AV53)
4. Pablo Sandoval - B - 3b (125 / AV89)
5. Garrett Jones - L - DH (107)
6. Josh Reddick - L - LF (99 / VG119)
7. Russell Martin - R - C (94 / FR101)
8. Brendan Ryan - R - SS (71 / EX84)
9. Rajai Davis - R - RF (81 / VG98)

Bench (OPS+ / DEF)
INF:  Elliot Johnson - B - (89 / AV140)
C:  Chris Snyder - R - (88 / AV66)
OF: Tony Campana - L - (69 / VG106)

With an offense that has improved at more positions than it decreased, we are going to have to plate an exceptional amount of runs to compensate for the mediocre pitching that will be on the mound at any given time. Will we be able to pull it off? I hope so, at least enough to be a thorn in the side of the top teams in the league!

Can Josh Reddick's beard lead us back to the Post Season...

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Out of curiosity, why don't you bump Davis from the starting lineup with Kendrick?

1. Coco Crisp - B - CF (99 / AV65)
2. Kyle Seager - L - 3B (103 / AV84)
3. Mark Teixeria - B - 1B (118 / AV53)
4. Pablo Sandoval - B - DH (125 / AV89)
5. Garrett Jones - L - RF (107 / AV111)
6. Howie Kendrick - R - 2B (102 / AV99)
6. Josh Reddick - L - LF (99 / VG119)
7. Russell Martin - R - C (94 / FR101)
8. Brendan Ryan - R - SS (71 / EX84)

That tweak on its own might be enough to get the Athletics into dark horse wildcard territory.

This was an idea that I had actually been toying with. I will probably run a few sims before the line-up is set in stone.

My spreadsheet could be all sorts of wrong, but it looks like about a 1 WAR improvement.  And that's not a ton, but for a team already looking like an 82-win club, an extra win and a bit of luck is all they'd need to sneak back into the postseason again!
