Title: World Series - Game 5
Post by: Robb on 25 Oct 2006 8:30:06 PM
DMBO 2006 World Series

Game 5

The Giants looked to push this series back to Toronto, facing elimination at home against Game 1 starter Pedro Martinez, who pitched a complete game, allowing just 2 runs.  The home team’s starter, Josh Beckett, wasn’t shabby himself, going 7 innings and allowing 3 runs.

The Jays struck first, when Ryan Klesko reached base on an error with one out.  Drew followed with a single, Jones and RBI double, and Konerko an RBI single, giving Toronto an early 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Pedro retired the 1st 6 batters he faced.  In the top of the 3rd inning, the Blue Jays built upon their lead, scoring 3 runs off of 3 doubles, a single, and a walk.  Jeff Francoeur hit a home run for the Giants in the bottom of the 4th, but the Blue Jays blew the game open in the top of the 5th.  Konerko and Cameron hit back to back singles, chasing Beckett out of the game.  Wuertz came in to pitch, and gave up a home run to Pete LaForest, putting the Blue Jays up 8-1.

Andy LaRoche hit a pinch hit 3 run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning, but it wasn’t enough.  Toronto answered with 3 runs of their own in the 8th inning, and cruised to the victory from there.  Pedro Martinez got the win, Beckett the loss.  Final Score – Toronto 11, San Francisco 4

I would have liked to have seen the NL come out on top, but the Blue Jays were tough.

That's 2 World Series titles over the past 3 years for the Jays.

Wow! It feels great to come out on top again, and return the world series title north of the border. I thought I had a shot at it all in 2004 when I won, but this year comes as a surprise - I was at best the third best team in the AL and fourth best team in DMBO (at best), but I got the breaks - some key injuries to my opponents, a couple of teams I couldn't beat going down to other teams, and lots of luck. The Jays may be the team that won the title, but they weren't the best team in DMBO.

Congratulations, Bruce. I thought this series would end up closer than it did, but you have the consolation of knowing that you did manage to beat the best team DMBO has ever seen in the Cardinals. And you did a hell of a job given what you had to start with a year ago. Look out, NL West.

Congrats to everyone else as well, for what was arguably the best season DMBO has ever had. Every year it gets tougher and tougher - and more and more fun. Can't wait for 2007!

Final league files and box scores have been posted.

I wish the Giants had been able to put up a better fight on behalf of the NL, but I think we used up all our magic against the Cardinals.  Going into the year, I didn't expect the Giants to be a playoff team, so this extended run has been a pleasant surprise.  We lost to the better team.  Good job, Scot.

Congrats Scot. I know you feel like you may not have been the best team in the AL but when you consider the records of your division rivals (the worst having 71 wins) I could see how your 99 wins is the best record in the AL.

You too Bruce, you have built a nice team in SF, hopefully in a year or 2 I can compete w/ my Rockies. I know it can be done because the Rox are in teh WS in another sim league of mine right now.

Jesus...I just got really emotional.  It must be the residual effects of my mancrush for David Eckstein.  I call him "Little Levitt", for those of you old enough to have enjoyed Barney Miller.

Anywho...Scot, not only did you bring your team to victory, but you did so with humility and class.  Congratulations on a great season!
